Change the locks – Former babysitters, housekeepers or workers could still have a key to your new home. It’s worth the investment to get new locks. Hiding a spare key outside is never a good idea. Install a key lock box instead.
Install baby proofing items – If you have a toddler, make sure you’ve baby proofed before you move in. A hardware-mounted gate must be installed at the top of the stairs, furniture should be secured to the walls and window guards and window wedges or window stops should be installed.
Check for fire extinguishers – Chances are you didn’t consider taking your fire extinguishers with you so be sure that there are some in your new home. Even if there are, consider getting new ones. Fire extinguishers last about 5 – 15 years but you probably won’t know how old yours are.
Inspect the yard – If your new home came with a play set, patio furniture or other outdoor items, be sure they’re in good working order and are free of beehives. Purchase warning signs for the driveway alerting delivery trucks that children are playing in your yard.
Stock up on emergency supplies – If you’re moving from an apartment to a house you might need more flashlights, batteries or other emergency provisions that you didn’t have before.
Have an emergency evacuation plan – Determine a meeting place away from the house and designate a neighbor’s home as the place your children should go if they need to evacuate. Be sure that all smoke detectors are in good working order. ADT Security Services offers free carbon monoxide and fire monitoring for new and existing customers.
